R-value is the single most misunderstood number in backpacking gear — and getting it wrong means being cold no matter how warm your sleeping bag is rated. Here’s what it actually measures and how to pick the right one for your trips.

What R-Value Actually Measures
R-value measures resistance to heat loss through the ground, not overall warmth. Your sleeping bag or quilt insulates you from the air; your pad’s job is entirely different — it stops the ground from pulling heat directly out of your body through conduction, which happens much faster than heat loss to air.
This is why a 15°F-rated bag can still leave you cold: if you’re lying on an R 1 pad on frozen or snow-covered ground, heat drains out through your back faster than the bag can compensate, regardless of the bag’s air-temperature rating. Pad R-value and bag temperature rating are two separate systems that both have to be right.
Higher R-value = more insulation from the ground = heavier and often bulkier or pricier. The goal is matching R-value to your coldest expected ground temperature, not maximizing it.

R-values are additive when you stack two pads. A common, cost-effective setup: a cheap closed-cell foam pad (R ~2) placed underneath your regular inflatable pad (R ~3-4) gets you to roughly R 5-6 combined — winter-capable warmth without buying a single expensive high-R pad. Cold Sleepers: Size Up a Tier
R-value guides assume an average sleeper. If you run cold at night, buy one R-value tier above what the season alone suggests — someone who’s always cold will be more comfortable on an R 4 pad during 3-season trips than the R 3 that works fine for most people. This is a cheaper and lighter fix than trying to compensate with a much warmer (and heavier) sleeping bag.
R-Value Isn’t the Only Spec That Matters
- Weight and packed size trade off against R-value — higher insulation usually means more material, though modern reflective-barrier pads (XLite NXT, NeoAir XTherm) manage high R-values at surprisingly low weight.
- Pad thickness affects comfort independent of warmth — side sleepers generally want 3"+ of thickness regardless of R-value.
